RVR Mystery Rose--any ideas? (pics)

I got this roses a couple of years ago as a free mystery rose from RVR. This is the very first bloom. I've looked through RVR's online search and haven't seen anything that looks right. Some of the spring bloomers look pretty close but it's blooming in November...

Also, there is light (VERY light) fresh fragrance. I doubt most folks would be able to detect it.

Any ideas? (sorry for the blurry pictures--I took them with my phone)

An almost thornless cane (fairly long--looks like it might want to climb)

One more just for good measure:

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Jeff

Could it be one of the knockout roses?

If this is its first bloom, and it took years to make it, then no, not knockout. But it may well be one of the species roses that RVR grows -- probably a once bloomer (even though it is now fall). Once bloomers often take more than a year to set their first bloom on a young plant. If I were you, I would grow it more and let it set a few hips and then try to id it from the type and color of the hips. Even then it is very difficult to tell the species roses, one from another, as many are singles and are pink.

Jeff, it looks like Schoener's nutkana to me. The info isn't on hmf, but wikipedia says it has few thorns; Cass' comments say she thinks it will rebloom and leaves look same to me. Just a thought, anyway. Connie at Hartwood carries it; maybe if you send the pic to her she can tell for sure.

I have a Rogue mystery rose too that hasn't bloomed yet; this is its second year, too. Maybe next year. Drives me crazy not to know.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've looked at the pictures of Schoener's Nutkana on hmf and other sites and it just doesn't seem quite right. Every picture I see has 5 petals (hmf also says 5); this rose has 8. Could it just be a fluke and this particular bloom has extra petals?

Nur Mahal, perhaps?

How big is the bloom? I'm certainly no expert, but it likes like an Apothecary rose, to me...or maybe La Belle Sultane?

Okay, I found something else. Schoener's comes in groups of 7 leaflets - are yours in 5? I did find a pic of Schoener's with 6 petals, but not 8. Maybe it will form hips, like Kathy mentioned.

Maybe it is a once bloomer that is having a late first bloom. I'll bet you'll figure it out for sure next year.

I don't think this is Schoener's Nutkana. The petals and stamens just don't look right. (Schoener's, BTW, produces bucketloads of hips.) SN is technically a once-bloomer, but mine produced a few flowers here and there from mid-summer onward.

Your best bet for identifying this rose is to let it grow a bit and get some photos of it in the garden when it flowers again next spring.

Connie, I love that blog posting. SN is one I've been wanting to get for a species garden area, and you have pretty well convinced me! Great pictures of that rose.

Gean, I found over twenty years ago, you can force Schoener's Nutkana to rebloom, if your season is long enough, by allowing it to form hips from each spent flower. Once they are swelling well, strip them all off, water and fertilize it thoroughly and it sets another crop of flowers. I did that with it in the old Newhall garden for years. It's a very nice shrub. Being half Paul Neyron, I wouldn't suggest it for areas where rust is an issue, though. I raised many seedlings from it over the years and rust was a huge issue with nearly all of them. Kim

Thanks again for some more information. Connie, your blog post is great. I hope somehow, it does turn out to be Schoener's Nutkana now. Yours is beautiful.

Gean, I really appreciate you following up with this and looking up additional information. That's just the kind of wonderful thing that happens sometimes on this forum and why I keep hanging out here with some really great people.

It does has 5 leaflets, not 7 so maybe not SN, sigh. The bloom is also 2 1/2 inches across.

Kim, does letting a rose set hips, cutting them off etc. work on other spring blooming roses?
