| Hello All,
I recently rooted cuttings of Marchal Niel Red or rouge. What are your experiences with this rose? How does it grow in N. TX. or similar climates? I recieved the cuttings from the Houston area where it was reported to have grown very well. thanks! |

| The only rose by that name mentioned in common references is the apparently extinct rose officially named 'Grossherzog Ernst Ludwig von Hesse' ('Pierre Notting' x 'Marechal Niel', 1898). The entry on that rose in Dickerson's THE OLD ROSE ADVISOR contains quotes from several early sources, including these comments: " . . . Not as vigorous as 'Marechal Niel' . . . not very abundant, and does not rebloom . . . very susceptible to mildew . . . It is a fraud that this novelty is described in some rosarian's catalogs as 'Red Marechal Niel'! . . . we have have found on the flowers we have seen not one trace of what properly might be called red . . . they are simply a more or less bright pink." The rose described by those sources hardly sounds appealing. Small wonder that it's probably extinct. Is there a more recent rose that's also known as MN Red/Rouge? Are there photos of the Houston plant in bloom? |

| I don't have photos of the parent plant, but I was given the cuttings by The TX Rose Rustlers at the Rosedango event in Oct. It was described as a very rare, pink Noisette- growing 12'to 18' w/ a heavy spring and fall bloom. The parent is reported to grow very well in Houston. I was also given cuttings of Souvenir de Madame Léonie Viennot and a mystery Bermuda rose. All of the cuttings are growing. Not sure how M. Niel and L. Viennot will grow in Dallas, but i'm going to give them a try. |

| Robin Delargy, proprietress of Vintage Bloomers, claimed one year a while back to have a pink sport of MN. I am not aware that she has ever released it. |
