| Hi, Would anyone happen to know of or can suggest a good rose that has the compact size and color of Pretty Jessica? Heirloom still has it listed on its site, but I purchased P.J. from them even though at the time it was indicated as being in stock, and it was not. I have been hoping to purchase this rose since July, but have not been able to locate it anywhere. I have given up and now am seeking an alternate. Your assistance is alway appreciated. Lynn |

| Roses Unlimited has it listed. You will have to see if it is in stock. Cath |

| Another old Austin that I purchased at Rogue Valley is Potter and Moore, which I like very much, actually more than Pretty Jessica, although PaM has little fragrance. It's also a fairly small rose with cupped pink flowers that have more petals than PJ, and for me also flowers somewhat more often. They're both young roses so my opinions are based on limited knowledge of the eventual growth and quality of these two varieties, but I must say that Potter and Moore is a great favorite with me. | Cath, I will definitely send an e-mail, but I have a vague recollection of issues with future availability..... Ingrid, I will definitely look up Potter and Moore. Thank you both. Orlinza |

| The Austin USA company has been trying to suppress PJ and some other unpatented roses by ordering licensees not to propagate them if they want access to new varieties. When I got my PJ from Roses Unlimited a few years ago, Pat told me it was probably the last year she would be propagating it, but maybe she got an accommodation. Other vendors didn't have that problem because they don't sell the patented varieties. |

| Another rose that stays small and has beautiful, fragrant flowers is the Bourbon, Mme. Dore. Mine is no more than two feet after at least three years. It needs afternoon shade but is an exquisite rose. Ingrid |

| Different kind of bloom, but the plant size and bloom color of The Fairy would be about right. Possibly Austin's Anne Boleyn would work. Wonderful pink blend flowers, but I must admit mine does not bloom that much. On the other hand, Austin's description is that Anne Boleyn is VERY floriferous. Maybe mine does not get enough sunshine. Very attractive when it does bloom. Kate |

| Vicks Caprice from the Antique Rose Emporium. If I couldn't get Pretty Jessica, I'd get VC. I grow them both and wouldn't trade them. Randy |

| Wow, Thank you Michaelg for confirming that I should not hold my breath waiting for this rose; well at least as an own-root plant. Ingrid, Potter & Moore is beautiful and I value your input. This rose is a contender. Dublinbay, I like the fairy but was hoping to keep the size of the bloom consistent in this case. This rose will be near SDLM. Thank you for reminding me about the Fairy as I was also looking for something with a smaller bloom to plant near Grandmother's Hat. Gnabonnand, Vick's Caprice is gorgeous, I love the white stripe. The images I have seen show it to be a darker pink than Pretty Jessica. I was hoping to place roses in the soft pink or softer side of medium pink in the area. Maybe I am off regarding the shade of Pretty Jessica as I have not seen it in person. Thusfar, the roses I have found are: Pretty Jessica, the down-side is, I would have to purchase 3, only need 2, and would prefer an own-root plant however I cannot seem to locate a supplier. Potter & Moore, possibly a good alternative. I am still looking at the growth, mature size etc. Tranquility - Clemmons 2004 - sold only by Heirloom, from what I can tell, which would mean that it would be a tiny band. My goal has been adding nothing to my garden moving forward that arrives in anything smaller than a 1 gallon pot; unless it is grafted.

| Lyn: I am also trying to locate a source for Pretty Jessica. Although listed on their site, I received an email response last week from Roses Unlimited that they no longer offer it. -Nancy |

| Heirloom Roses offers PRETTY JESSICA, although they are currently out of stock. I've been very frustrated with the David Austin people over this rose. They claim it is weak. I disagree. It is one of the better short English Roses for the Eastern United States. The plant is fully hardy in zone 5, is vigorous on its own roots (something that can't be said for many roses), repeats well, and has drop dead gorgeous flowers that are sinfully fragrant. Yes the foliage will get black spot here in black spot hell but so does every other English Rose. I remember reading somewhere that David Austin considers Wife of Bath as his best short pink. Well I guess so if you can put up with the obnoxious myrrh fragrance. Among the Old Garden Roses take a look at Souvenir de la Malmaison and its deeper pink sport Capitaine Dyel de Graville. |

| I got Pretty Jessica from Heirloom, oh around 20 years ago or so. Perfectly healthy here (zero rust and mildew), but blooms seldomly--one of the least floriferous of the David Austin's I've had. Potter and Moore was wonderful here, until it was eaten alive by a massive plant of Cl. Cecile Brunner. P and M doesn't like complete and total shade.;)a Prospero is a superb small Austin in Southern California heat but the flower form is different than PJ--much flatter and darker. Very fragrant. | Pretty Jessica seemed to hate my climate. I've tried two and they both died, even though they were planted in good spots and I babied them. |

| I received my new Pretty Jessica from Linda Loe (Long Ago Roses) in August when I ordered Anne Laurie McDowell. She warned me that PJ was very small - about 5 inches - and she would be glad to hold it for me until it put on some size, but I asked her to send it on to me. It has done well - already doubling its size in two months. The PJ Linda sent me was her only rooted one. Don't know if she has since rooted others or not. Lou |

| Lynn, I had Capitaine Dyel de Graville, and it was to die for. It's in the SDLM clan and has similar shaped blooms (appropriate since SDLM is nearby in your garden) and the most gorgeous shade of rich pink that is similar to PJ on HMF. My young plant bloomed abundantly. Alas, he was a BS magnet and was mostly naked in between flushes (but BS isn't an issue for you in the desert, right?) so I gave him to Rose Petals Nursery. Not sure if Cyd has any for sale right now, but she does have a mother plant. CDdG is hard to find. Sherry |

| Hi Sherry, I have seen CDdG online and have been coveting it for a while. I am running out of real estate for roses, and where I gathered this rose would look best lacks open space for even a daylily at this point. There are at least three in pots that I will need to gift to relatives. I am also beginning to wonder if Pretty Jessica is to dark to be placed near SDLM? I have not seen it in person, the images are so varied, and I am now having difficulty assessing if it would be appropriately placed near SDLM? Lynn |

| Lynn, I think you may be worrying too much about color tones. I've found that varying pink tones do very well next to each other, and it actually makes for a more interesting look than if they are too closely matched. The old roses and Austins have soft-enough tones that they rarely clash with each other. I would give more importance to how healthy the rose is in your area and how much you love it. If the roses are interspersed with companion plants it becomes even less of an issue. Ingrid |
|
| Lynn, the colors of SDLM and PJ would look great together. I'd be more concerned that SDLM didn't overwhelm PJ with her sheer size. My PJ is a rich pink but not a dark pink. Colors are so hard to describe. Lou |

| Ingrid, thank you....this thread became part of my neurosis not described by me, but others in the thread you started. Boy do we help one another with some of that.... Lou, thank you for improving my confidence regarding placement of these roses. Sometimes it becomes challenging to determine what a rose will do when I have not laid eyes on it in person. I am ever so grateful for member presented images of an entire bush and/or blooms when a rose plant is mature. |
