Mme Jules loves the camera

After eleven years of drought and tough water restrictions in recent years, we have had some excellent rain in Spring in southern Australia. And boy haven't the roses responded!
My old tea climber Mme Jules Gravereaux hasn't done too well in the last two years (thrip) but she has given of her best this year. Her tea perfume is quite overwhelming and there has been almost no petal or bud disfigurement. She really seems to photograph well. Hope you agree.

And finally just to keep your spirits high through the northern Winter a bowl of my favourite (Evelyn) picked this morning

Speaking as a gardener who can't afford to give established roses supplementary water, and who lives with an annual summer drought,
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RAIN!!
A good flowering is just that much more wonderful, because less certain, when you have to depend on the weather to give your roses the water they need to bloom. And yes, your 'Mme. Jules Gravereaux' is splendid.
Nice to see your pictures.

I'm so glad to see your Mme. Jules since mine died when it was very small, and I'm amazed at how beautiful your specimen is. Congratulations on your much-needed rain; I know you've had many tough years and I'm so glad you've finally had some relief. May it continue for a long time.

All your pictures are beautiful. Thank you.

I wonder if my Madame Jules is the right thing. It never displays that much gold. I should look in the tea roses book. I know they can be variable too.
So glad you got some rain! We did too.

Thank you all for your encouraging responses. Even though our Spring rainfall has been better than in recent years I suspect our stringent water restrictions will remain throughout Summer and Autumn ( i.e. two hours hand-watering on two days a week. No sprinklers and no lawn watering)
Re the color of Mme Jules Gravereaux- I have noticed the depth of egg-yolk yellow/gold at the centre of the bloom varies with the season and this year it is particularly noticeable. This rose was very popular in Australia in the early years of the 20th century but then disappeared for more than 60 years. The current rose was apparently re-introduced from New Zealand some years ago and may account for the deeper color.
I picked a bowl of Mme Jules for a friend's 80th birthday tomorrow. The color in this photograph is pretty accurate. Also taking some H.T's and Austins (on right)

Lovely roses! Your Mme. Jules reminds me of Gloire de Dijon. I wish I could grow the teas, but then again, I can grow albas and others that don't mind cool summers & cold winters.

Is that Double Delight I see as the focal point in the left bowl in the second picture? What is the white rose below & to its left (as I view the picture)?

Yes york rose it's D.D. My tree rose is full of blooms at the moment. The white rose is Pascali but the white buds are of Tineke which does well in my area. Thrips are absent this year so the white roses are looking good. I'm looking forward to trying Pope John Paul II which is due for release in Australia in 2010.

Thanks for the info! I've read of Pascali (& also JPII), but never grown either. I did once grow D.D. and will grow it again if I ever have land of my own where I can grow it.

To me it has always (visually) resembled nothing so much as a French Vanilla raspberry sundae!

RE: 'Purple'

What is your lovely dark violet/light(ish) purple/crushed blackberry red rose on the right (of which there appear to be two open blossoms + one bud)?

The two back blooms are Falstaff (Austin) and the smaller front rose is William Shakespeare 2000. My digital camera struggles to get the red roses right. Always come up as a pinkish-red. The following snap of Falstaff is closer to his color.
