Mrs. Dudley Cross in Mid-Atlantic

Hi guys! How is everyone?! Had a question!

Is Mrs. Dudley Cross worth trying here in Maryland? Or is it not worth it due to blackspot?

Well, no one's responding. She's wonderfull here in hot, humid Florida, but I think you have more blackspot pressure than we do.

Hi Max,

In my garden, it gets quite a bit of black spot and has been disappointing in some ways--however it is vigorous and keeps foliage at the top of the plant. The flowers, too, are relatively unimpressive in summer but are significantly better in spring and fall. That is a common pattern for teas but it is even more heightened in 'Mrs Dudley Cross'. In my opinion, there are healthier and better performing teas in this region, but its flowers of this plant are stunning at times and the plant can look quite good in certain seasons (spring and even more so, fall). It just isn't one of the more black spot-resistant teas.

While this grows well in my garden, I do have some small perennials in front of her to hide her naked legs.
Have you considered Mons Tillier or Georgetown tea. Both have more blooms here. Also the colors dont fade as much during the heat of summer.
Give them a try.

Mine is covered in leaves from top to bottom. Actually I should say one of them is, and the one that is in the worse location has sulked for years. However, even the "good one", with lush foliage, has had disappointing flowers for months now in the heat. If I had to do it over, I would have picked another tea, in spite of the gorgeous flowers during the cooler period. Mine have no disease for most of the year, but then this is warm and dry southern California, so you can ignore that part.

Oath, I grew both 'MDC' and 'Marie van Houtte' in north Alabama and much preferred Marie for vigor and constant blooming. Maybe that is something you might check if you like MDC's blooms, as they are very similar.

Now, how that translates to your particular zone, I don't know. I'm just saying that I found it to be true that Marie is a much more vigorous, healthy and bloom happy rose. Thorny, though, and maybe a low thorn rose is what you're after with 'Mrs. Dudley Cross.'
