Ball, Crisp or Rust? Tis the season

Why is it that just when the roses are getting ready to be good. We have a few days of misty drizzly fog, or nice hot dry wind?

And of course, Abe decided to let me know it rust season is here for him....but that is to be expected.

I don't much mind some rust at this time of the year. Those old leaves will soon be gone anyhow -- and some of them won't be rusting because shrieking Santa Ana winds already blew them from here to Los Angeles. :-)

Alas, we're having those same Santa Ana winds. Why do they always come after a nice rainfall and proceed to undo the effect of the rain? Still, that's better than no rain, Jeri. Luckily, I haven't seen rust yet, just a slight bit of mildew and blackspot, and balling on only one rose. Early spring after a wet winter is the worst time for me, especially in regard to mildew.

Oh, NO rain here. None. Nor I don't expect to see measurable rain here for a good month or maybe more.

I DREAM about rain . . .

On the other hand....Iceberg!

I love your Icebergs!

I am going to poke a bunch of them in when the neighbor prunes hers and gets rid of them (she wants to sell them and I think hers are all grafted and I want ownroot)

Is that your Belinda? I like ours, but she crisps. She is a baby still I suppose, so maybe next season.....

FYI Brilliant Pink Iceberg is great too

What an ingenious idea to make a hedge of Iceberg and Brilliant Pink Iceberg. It is beyond beautiful.

Please, MORE pictures of your crisped, balled-up and rust-afflicted roses!

We don't get much crisp or rust here. Our seasons are ball, mildew, black spot, WINTER, lol!

That was the Huntington this morning. They planted a gazillion of them a couple of years ago. They look great.

Thank you for sharing those Hoovb. I think one of the best, continuously blooming roses we have in the back yard are the 2 "3 in 1" Icebergs. They were supposed to be Burgundy, Brilliant Pink and Iceberg, but I think we got a double dose of Brilliant Pink because I see nothing that looks like our other Burgundy Iceberg. They bloom and bloom... Poor Mary Rose is right there and is lost in the sea of Iceberg looking rather dull.

Burgundy Iceberg impresses the heck out of me. They have planted it all around one of the Convalescent homes where we make Therapy Dog visits -- it's really a workhorse, and no disease at all (Of course, this is SoCal). Moreover, the pale reverse really give the bloom depth.

Jeri, I am amazed that with all the Icebergs planted here, there are so few of Burgundy, Pink and Brilliant Pink. (I think our 3 in 1 is actually the two pinks and white rather than Burgundy and Brilliant Pink)

I am guessing it has to do with price and patents, because the plants are great. Our pinks might actually do as well or better than the white. (so far no balling-no crisping-no rusting-and I don't recall seeing any mildew!)

Birgundy Iceberg has been one of my best and most ever-blooming roses until last spring when it began to show blackspot, which it still has. I'll prune it back in January and if it does the same thing next year I may have to give it up. It seems to have infected several of its rose neighbors also.

I spoke too soon, took a closer look at my roses this morning. More of them are balling, including Wm. R. Smith and others, rust on La France and beginning mildew on several, including new shoots of Mutabilis. I'd like to think that there is one day in the year when everything in the garden is perfect, but I have my doubts. On a bright note, Bermuda Kathleen is better than she's ever been, hundreds of buds, perfect leaves, thickly leaved bush, quite a few flowers. Must concentrate on the positives....
