I didn't want to hijack the thread on Yellow Mutabilis, but wanted to share there are Mutabilis hybrids available which perform quite well here. One complaint about the Lens "hybrid musks" too closely related to Multiflora and Ballerina is they shut down by late summer, early fall until the next spring. The Mutabilis hybrids from Lens do not. I'm still getting buds and flowers here now in early December. The Lens Nursery released Souv. de Louis Lens which has much of the expected appearance of Yellow Mutabilis. It is a seedling Mr. Lens raised with the following, all out of Trier X Mutabilis, but which wasn't released until recently. Previous sister seedlings from the Trier X Mutabilis breeding, which we already have here in the US (thank you Euro Desert!) are Plaisanterie, Apricot Bells and Patricia Beucher, and the American Mateo's Silk Butterflies. Second generation seedlings here are Max Eber's Enjouee and my Rayon Butterflies. Kim

They sound interesting: thanks for posting, Kim. I have 'Rush' and possibly another Lens rose and haven't quite yet figured out what the fuss is about. It's great to hear that Lens is bringing 'Trier' back into breeding, and a cross with 'Mutabilis' sounds brilliant! I remember seeing 'Trier' at the rose collection at Cavriglia years ago and being struck by its overall look of balance and freshness. A friend gave me cuttings of it this fall, and I hope to have it next year growing in my garden as well. My gardening pal also gave me cuttings from his 'Yellow Mutabilis', and I hope I have better luck with it than I usually do with 'Mutabilis' and get it to root! His rose was beautiful! |

I got Plaisanterie and Trier from VG two years. Plaisanterie had a tough time the first year, so I moved her and she is doing better but is still small. I lost my first Trier to RRD a few months after it went in. I replaced it this summer. I picked up Mateo this summer from Roses Unlimited. It was a large gallon and has grown beautifully, but not one bloom yet. I'm looking forward to all of them, but so far none has bloomed.

Paul Barden has also used Trier -- it does seem to have more to give. And Kim -- your Rayon Butterflies looks good here. Jeri

I wonder how Mutabilis would influence a re-make of Noisettes by crossing it with either R. moschata or "Secret Garden Musk Climber." Kim -- is this something you've investigated? :-) ~Christopher

Thanks, Jeri. Christopher, what I have been investigating is using Secret Garden with my Fedtschenkoana hybrids as well as selected minis and Basye's Legacy hybrids. I continue (fruitlessly) attempting a Comtesse du Cayla X Mutabilis (and the reverse) cross as they just "need" to be crossed. I do have to 0-47-19 X Mutabilis seedlings I've retained to play with, but the best plant for me yet from Mutabilis is a Marie Pavie X Mutabilis cross. It flowers continuously with good foliage. I have to get it into the ground as it appears to be too stressed in its pot, and looks as if it wants to be large. Most Mutabilis seedlings have been too mildewy, so these have been a nice surprise. Rayon Butterfed so far, is the most interesting of the lot. I used it extensively this year as pollen parent, resulting in MANY seeds which are germinating quite quickly! Kim

Why is butterFED breeding stock only? I like the look of it. Jeri

Because I've not rooted it nor shared it with anyone yet. I've been evaluating it. The thing performs like a poly, few growth buds along the stems with copious flowering clusters. It has never stopped blooming! I would have questioned its containing the Fed. parentage if it weren't for the continuous flowering 1-72-1DLFED3 seedling which only stops flowering when allowed to dry out. I can imagine Rayon Butterfed used as a bedding variety or on a standard. Kim

Kim, I love the note you added to 'Rayon ButterFED' about playing around with remaking the old classes -- that was exactly what I was wondering. I'll have to look through your introductions and breeding stock on HMF to see more of your work....unless you've got a blog somewhere...hint-hint-hint. :-) ~Christopher

Thanks Christopher. The blog is below, but may not have all you want from it. Kim

Early December and Apricot Bells is pushing buds with gorgeous foliage! (Trier X Mutabilis). Kim

Thank you Gean. The plants and flowers of both are quite nice. Let me know when you're interested in trying more cuttings and they're yours. Kim
