| Growing a row of large albas and damasks. Got alot of pinks and whites. Thought it might be nice to add purple. But what purple would mix in well? |

| Some of the multiflora ramblers such as Veilchenblau, Violette and a modern one, Purple Skyliner, have enough density to hold their own as freestanding , albeit large, shrubs or intermingle quite nicely with albas. Some of the dark velvet gallicas, such as Tuscany and Tuscany Superbe might work, along with Charles de Mills or Nuits de Young (although these have been banished from my college gardens for unruly behaviour and rampant spreading) and also have a tendency to fade to a quite unattractive (to my eyes) reddish colour. |

| Joe Grey. It was a glorious thing to behold when I saw it at Eurodesert. Dense, bushy and covered in flowers all the way to the ground. Much shorter than the big albas and damasks though at 3 to 4 feet. HMF only lists the default for zones, 6b to 9b. If it takes after the multiflora parent your zone would likely be okay, but if it takes after the chinensis parent, not so much. Some others: Vineyard Song (3 to 4 feet) Russelliana (climber, 10 to 20 feet) Rugosa Magnifica (4 to 5 feet--I've seen it much BIGGER) Melissa |

| Ebb Tide is lovely and I just purchased Rhapsody in Blue (pretty picture) but I know Belle de Crecy and Bleu Magenta are beautiful with pink and white :) Ebb Tide (not my photo...but very similar color) Rhapsody in Blue Belle de Crecy...I wish I could find my photo...even prettier! Bleu Magenta...this is a very hardy little rose. Withstood porch crashing onto in and reconstruction...and so delicate looking when it blooms. Mine has even more purple :) |

| Wow this is a ever growing hobby lol. Just ordered hippolyte and another alba. Came back to the forum and saw all the new replies. I dont even wanna think about spring and all the holes i gotta shovel. Maybe i should slow down lol. |

| How about 'The Bishop' or is it too red to class as purple? I have never seen it to really comment. SCG |

| I think Hippolyte was a good idea. Charles de Mills, Tuscany and other Gallicas can take over a whole bed, if not the world. |

| I love my Reine des Violettes. It's so fragrant and is hardy to the tips for me in zone 6. It should be fairly hardy for you in zone 5 although you may have to prune it more in the spring. Since it's a very vigorous monster grower that may be a good thing, lol!

| 'Indigo' is rated a default zone 6b on helpmefind, but I noticed a grower in zone 5 that has had good success with it. It reblooms which is why I like it. Some polyanthas will do okay in your cold, I believe - 'Lauren' is rated to 2b on hmf - Lauren

| I used to have Indigo, but took it up to my mom's because it got too big for the space! I think it would do just fine in zone 5. Most gallicas will do well, too. Jenny Duvall is really pretty...not my picture, but closest one I could find to what ours looks like. I like to put gallicas and other roses that change color in the fairy garden...the nieces and nephews are convinced we have fairies living under the big rose bush in the corner, who come out and change the colors on the roses, when no one is looking! :) |

| Cardinal Richelieu is my favorite. Even old and fading to gray, the blossoms have class. |

Hmmm, bman1920 said "purple" and "Gallica" in his original post, but I see we have wandered far afield, and so I'll add a couple more suggestions. I like the idea of purple roses too, but there are also Gallicas that start out purplish pink and then age purple-lavender-gray, and that are good. 'De la Maitre-Ecole' (the name has variations) is very good, with large fragrant blooms and a sturdy grower--it does sucker--and a favorite of mine, which might require better treatment than some, is 'Ypsilante', with big scented velvety flowers. I wish this one WOULD sucker. Actually I have met very few Gallicas I didn't like, and most of the medium- and darker-hued ones lean to purple or lavender at some stage of bloom development. Leaving Gallicas behind, a rambling rose I like, even though it's scentless, is 'Rose Marie Viaud'. This has little double blooms the shape and color of a Parma violet. I'm currently trying to figure out a place for mine where it won't die of chlorosis. Oh, and finally, two purple Mosses: 'William Lobb', very tall, vigorous and obliging, and 'Capitaine John Ingram', low-growing and Gallica-like, the flowers little velvet purple rosettes with a button eye and a smooth lavender reverse. Both fragrant, of course. Melissa |

| Belle de Crecy is my favorite purple gallica, and it looks nice mixed in with pinks and whites. |

Oops...I thought 'Gallica' was one of the specifications in the original post. I see here I was wrong. A hallucination, I suppose: sorry! Melissa |
