New FSC Rose Garden Photos

I've just posted many new photos of the continued development of the Florida Southern College Heritage Rose Garden. We hope to have the cedar top to the arbor completed this week, as well as the free-standing pillars throughout the garden. Have a look if interested!

Thanks Malcolm! It sure was nice to get a rose fix. FSC is a lovely place.

Colonial Days looks gorgeous. In pictures it looks to be an improvement on both parents (Fisherman's Friend x The Squire). Could this be a cultivar for someone who wants the Austen look without the Austen problems?

Do you know if any American nursery will be offering it for sale? Is any nursery carrying Dian Gilles' roses at the present time?

I believe Rose Petals has or will have it. My only complaint about Colonial Days is that it has very little fragrance. Something about a dark red rose demands fragrance. But it is otherwise a very good rose indeed, and here in central Florida, where Austins often grow to be huge bushes with very few flowers, this one is staying somewhat compact and blooming heavily and continuously.

I'm trying to get more of Diann Giles' roses, and will distribute them to interested nurseries. Not sure if anyone is selling them at the moment.

What a large and impressive project this is. It's going to be magnificent when the roses have put on a little more growth. The only thing I would change or rather add are some companion plants such as irises which would look spectacular with the roses.

Ingrid, Unfortunately irises don't do well here. We do want to use some other plants though; perhaps blue plumbago under the edges of the arbor.

Stunning, this will certainly be a destination garden for decades to come. Thank you for sharing the pics.

It looks great Malcolm and it's only the beginning. By the time I make it back again I know it will be amazing.

Malcolm, I'm glad you're thinking along the same lines, and plumbago should be lovely. I suppose day lilies would be too labor-intensive, although soft lavenders and purples would be beautiful. I understand your main theme is the roses, and as they grow bigger and more impressive there may not be so much of a need for companion plants.

Do you know yet what climbers you'll be using?

Ingrid, We're also thinking large pots of seasonal annuals, which would give different colors and textures.

As for climbers -- not all are certain yet, but the big central gazebo is to have 'Marechal Niel', one of the few roses we grow that can actually reach the top center (15 feet high). Elsewhere along the arbor, we'll likely use Secret Garden Musk Climber, Sombreuil (the Colonial White synonym), perhaps "Fields of the Wood" (='Rhode Island Red'?), 'Gartendirektor Otto Linne', 'Prosperity', and likely others. I hope to use 'Don Juan' and/or one of my seedlings of 'Dortmund' on the end stucco pillars. Elsewhere in the garden, on the 8-foot free-standing pillars, I'm thinking 'Crepuscule', 'Clytemnestra', my own 'Lois Manners', Dr. Prevatt (peachy pink sport of Cl. America), and not sure what else, yet. So we'll have a variety of colors, but emphasizing FSC's colors of red and white near the entrances to the garden.

Now that I live in N. GA., I can't roam the campus any time I want. This may sound weird but the ONLY thing I miss about Fl. are some friends and FSC. GO BIG RED & WHITE!!!! Go Mocc's!!! Keep the pic's coming.

Nastarana, Colonial Days is gorgeous! And was a real stand out in the garden. I brought home a baby. It is truly an impressive rose. I would say it is similar to an Austin...Fragrance is usually on the top of my list but this one blew me away...as did Edith Schur (1976), a rose I'd never seen. Susan

I just added 169 more photos of the garden (I know, that's WAY too many...) The central arbor is now complete and ready for roses. Free-standing pillars are not yet up, but should be soon.
