Felicite Parmentier

have peaked my interest. Enable me.

Please share information or post pictures. Although once blooming,
any chance of repeat?

Who were The Parmentiers?

No chance of repeat to my knowledge. The first is a (hybrid?) alba the second is a hybrid gallica. These are old european rose hybrids.

There are other 'Parmentiers' bred by this guy

and some 'Parmentiers' named in honour of him.

RE: The Parmentiers

The Parmentiers were a bunch of Belgian brothers from the early 19th century. If I remember things right, Desiree's and Felicite's father was the head of a garden. Their uncle was the rose breeder, and another uncle is often given credit for advancing American horticulture. Andre came to the US and started a nursery near the current site of Rockefeller Center. He also did landscape design. The only surviving work of his is the Vanderbilt Mansion grounds in Hyde Park (I always find it strange to type that since the estate was the original Hyde Park, and gave its name to the town) He did some work on southern plantations that have yet to be identified, so it is possible that more survives.

Felicite is a very nice, relatively small Alba. I don't grow it, but I've seen it, and very much liked what I've seen. Desiree has proliferated too much for me to really approve. However, it has responded to neglect, and offends much less than it used to when fed.

Thank you for the details of The Parmentiers!

I recently came across the term "proliferation", in regards to roses.
It has to do with a bud eye and a malformed rose pushing through.

Isn't Felicite Parmentier also Madame Hardy? I think she's the only person to have two roses named for her :)

Felicite Parmentier I recommend as a tidy alba with beautiful flowers and intense, wonderful fragrance. Desiree P was shovel-pruned because most of the blooms would proliferate and look like a mutant alien growth.
