Here in the Bay Area of California we are in the midst of steady rainfall this weekend, much needed and greatly valued, at least by people who do realize that rain must fall if they are not to have water restrictions. This is good for the new tea bed I have laid out for planting, for the native shrub bed I have begun to plant outside the fence to attract more birds, and the drought tolerant trees I am planting on the bare, weedy hill beside my garden. Over the next few years I plan to turn it into a grove-like woods. In our summer dry climate, trees are best spaced well apart so they can all find enough water. I will be old before they are tall, but I will have planted myself a little forest. So what is my Christmas wish? If you are in drought, as a lot of the country (and the world) has been, may there be abundant rain, enough to restore groundwater and reservoirs. If you have suffered from floods or landslides, may this year's rain come slowly and gently so that the earth can absorb it safely, and may there be many sunny days to brighten your spirits. I wish us all the weather we need most this year. Rosefolly
Follow-Up Postings:
|
I second your wish. It's been raining cats and dogs here for a few weeks now. I've been looking each week at the Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas 10 day forecasts, and I don't see rain. I wish we could lend you midwesterners some...
|
Oh, I only WISH it had been raining cats and dogs here in SoCal. Most of the systems that you've lived with have fallen apart right about at Pt. Conception. Instead of abundant and longed-for rain, we have gotten chill and drizzle -- barely measurable. Not that I am not grateful for what we have -- I'd just love to see good snowfall in the Tehachapis and thereabouts, to replenish our over-worked aquifers. Jeri

It's supposed to rain tomorrow and Wednesday but who knows how much. We need every little bit. So does much of the rest of the world and I wish we could make that happen. Ingrid

Gardeners know what's important: I think we're slightly more sane that the average member of the population. Here we're very happy to have had ample rain this fall but with no slides or slumps--so far!--and we know how to value Paula's Christmas wish. I'll add my wish to hers, as it can't be improved on.

Let's all commit Paula's wish to prayer for all.
|
Here, it did rain last night. A slow, gentle rain, that continued through the night. Between this rain and the last, we have gotten about 3/4-in altogether. It's brighter out, now, and maybe the continued drizzle, or heavy mist, has finally ended. The plants, as last, are happy. Jeri

If we're wishing weather wishes, I wish for no hard freezes this winter and especially no 18-degree or even 22-degree nights. Just to be clear... NONE. Thank you!!! Sherry

Rain is a blessing. I'm sorry to say that we've had trouble with our steep 1/2 mile driveway this season. I'm hoping it doesn't get worse as the ground becomes more saturated.

Just up the freeway from Jeri we got over an inch from the last storm. Maybe more because the gauge is just under 2" and I can't remember if I dumped it after the last rain. The ground is fairly wet and every plant seems happy to have all the rain. My earth moving project seems to have worked as I intended and we kept all of the run off where I wanted it in the lower garden. I have tiny green tips of daffs poking their heads up here and there, the bella donna lilies still surprise me when I find one in the middle of a walk way. Guess there is a bulb deep down somewhere. And of course, have I got weeds to pull!!!! Grrr Mallows!
|
MALLOWS! Yeah, Kippy -- A decent portion of rain IS making it down as far as S.B., but very little is making it to our "Pleasant Valley." Today was supposed to be sunny -- but we are solid cloud-cover, and pretty chilly. Still -- it is Christmas, and not a day for worrying. Best wishes to all. Jeri

Getting darker and darker here (coastal Orange County)... Pruning roses is always my preferred activity on Christmas Day; and I'm getting some done, but the ground is sticky from bouts of light rain over the last week or two. Believe it or not, I have a daffodil blooming: 'Van Rijnveld's Early Sensation'. Also blooming for Christmas, just as planned, Camellia 'Shikibu' (link to pic [not by me] below). Best yuletide wishes to all!

That is an extraordinarily-lovely camellia! Jeri

Jeri, Your doggie photo is hilarious. Thank you!!! My prayer is peace to all, to every person of every religion. During this particular season I feel an urgency to the prayer that every child be protected, and may every person be guarded by grace. A prayer of Roses. May the blossoms of wild roses thrive along the pathways and gladden the hearts of those who see these five petaled wonders, and note their dainty charm. May wild roses be preserved in all their habitats. God bless your home and those within, Lux.

All of the above and please not another precious child or pet taken away by a tornado.

We have had an abundance of rain since this posting began but it, as unfortunately much of the time in our area, is ushered in my tornadoes. Fortunately, no deaths, but lots of homes and vehicles dashed. Thousands without power and temperatures below freezing. C'est la vie, but it is worth living and praying for.
