What is this strange "scarring" on the new growth of my Zulud House Shingled Raspberry? How do I best treat it?
Thanks.
Gracin

If it was in my own coastal Southern California garden, I'd say it was old, damaged foliage. In effect, scarring.

What does the underside of the leaf look like?

Not to be flip, but you might have more specialized help over on the Fruits forum. ;-)

Gracin, anytime I see black on leaves I blame stink bugs aka leaffooted bugs. Your damage looks mild. Usually, the leaves are also deformed/crumpled. I haven't seen them in a while maybe due to lower temps. Maybe yours left town before he could finish the job.

She was in the right place. It's a rose. :-)

Jeri,
This is what the underside looks like.

Sherry,

Some of the leaves are crumpled. Does this confirm your "stinkbug" diagnosis?

Lagomorphmom,
If Sherry doesn't confirm her Stink bug diagnosis, I'll try the fruit forum next.
Thanks for the idea.

Well, they look a little different but I'm used to tea rose leaves. These aren't as bad as they get. If you've only got a few scattered around, I wouldn't worry about it, and there's nothing you can do anyway except kill them by hand (wear gloves because the stink stays on your hands). I was googling and found a post of mine from 2009.

I'm not an expert, but I think your damage is their handiwork. They go for the new growth and flower buds, sucking the juices out of them.

Are you sure it's leaf footed bugs? The only thing I ever see them eating is my tomatoes.

I suppose if they prefer tomatoes, the tomatoes may be distracting the larger numbers from the roses, but if you have the bugs and roses, then I definitely think they're on the roses, too. I had hollyhocks at one point and the bugs collected on them in a big way. I was relieved at first that they weren't on the roses, but after a while the large population moved on to the roses. After all, I have way more roses than hollyhocks. They also feed in grass and weeds. You really have to look hard for them in the roses. The giveaway is the "singed", deformed/shriveled new growth and flower buds. When I see that, I start looking for the bugs. They're there usually on the tips where the new growth is. I also smell them as I walk in the garden. Apparently, the slightest disturbance causes them to emit their stink. Also, they have several "looks" in their stages of growth. Once they hatch they suck in all stages.

Plucking and smushing is the only thing I know to control them.

I found a blog post that I did on these bugs (and others). Scroll down past the love bugs to see these bugs and the effected leaves.
