Oh, roses in June, that's the most special gardening month for me....

Ann, that was an interesting journey. I enjoy wondering what life was like for my ancestors who also enjoyed their gardening. I wonder how many of the recommended roses are still recommended today.

The centerpiece of my new front bed is Marie Van Houtte. I am interested in others, but want to be sure that I get varieties that will continue blooming in the heat. Until I stop teaching, I want to enjoy the bloom from the first of June until the first of August. May is so busy for me, and that is what my roses have their first blooms. Often when school is out, I am waiting for the next flush. Two or three flushes don't impress me. I like constant.

for your posting, I will read it again and again, this winter.

I especially loved reading these opinions, which show how that era differs from ours,
in the old fashioned garden section,
-None of the all-summer bloomers with tea blood are admissible to the old -fashioned garden."

I especially love a garden bed, where violet and geranium, old fashioned pinks, cultivats from the 1800's are mixed with Tea roses from that time, and to me that is an old fashioned garden, but that very same scheme would appear as a modern garden, to the writer in 1909.

and
"spray with whale oil soap if aphids persist" darn, I won't find that at the Home Depot.

I also thank you, because there were a few Tea roses I'd never heard of, and wonder if they are still in commerce anywhere in the world.
