See the chart on page 42 for information about where the sample roses came from, including city, altitude, and annual rainfall. Samples 7 and 8 came from Aleppo, which has an altitude of 392 meters (1,286 feet) and 350 to 450 mm (13.78 to 17.72 inches) of annual rainfall. The altitude and average rainfall are similar to measurements for my garden, where damasks do just fine. Temperature ranges are similar as well.

Yeah. That's that "inland-thang." I couldn't live where you do, because I find it hotter in the summer, and colder in the winter than is comfortable for me. You'd probably find my climate boring ...

And yet, by the USDA Zone maps, we're not that far apart!

Sunset Zones are more useful that way. I'm borderline Z 23-24. You are???

I think I'm in Sunset zone 19. Would be nice to be more bored in the summer as it can get mighty toasty here! I stay inside in the air conditioning. Thought I knew what hot was until I visited Eurodesert (Morongo Valley) in July. It was like walking in an oven. Arrived one *morning* and it was already 111. It went way up in the afternoon. The roses I brought back from that trip are real survivors, R. xanthina, R. spinosissima, R. borissovae, and R. glabrifolia among them.

Yes. In SoCal, the further inland you go -- the more removed from that moderating ocean influence -- the hotter it gets in the summer, and the colder it gets in the winter. Here, we are under ocean influence most of the time.

Of course -- if we lose the wonderful cold Alaskan current -- if we have more and more East wind -- if the rains continue to fail . . . it's all going to be different. I think I'm glad I won't be here, in 20 years.
