My Marachel Niel' died, and I was so in love with it, it crossed my silly mind to dig a grave for it, and lay roses upon it. It had everything I wanted in a yellow rose, fragrance, and elegant beauty. Can you please suggest a yellow fragrant rose that is in commerce, to replace my lost love? I'm considering 'Michelangelo' because it appears more lemony yellow. 'Leys Perpetual' intrigues me, how does it compare to 'Etoille de Lyon' in depth of color, and scent and size? Thanks so much.

Lady of Shallot if you want BIG plant -- yes it's a bit to the orange/peach side, but it gives the right impression en masse. Golden Zest if you want smaller plant that is a non-fading yellow with enormous fragrance.

Why not a new Marechal Niel? You loved it so.

Legrice's masterpiece, Allgold, was the culmination of a 30 year breeding project to grow a fragrant, healthy NON-FADING yellow. Yellow roses which are fragrant and healthy are ten a penny, but ones which can maintain a clear yellow colouring, in sun and damp are rare as hen's teeth. Also wondering why not another Marechal Niel?

Because I pampered it for 3 years from a 4 inch tall little band plant and it never grew more than 3 feet tall. Then it died suddenly. If I could buy Marachel Niel on rootstock I'd buy another in a heartbeat. From what I read from another gardener who dug up a 9 foot tall M.N the rootball on the plant was no where near large enough to support its' growth, which is why it died. Rootstock= more vigor. Thanks for answering, I've never smelled / Allgold' does it have a mixed floral scent? or lemony? or??? Lux

Allgold has a fresh apple-like smell (reminds me of New Dawn) but in the health vs fragrance equation, it scores more highly on the disease resistance than the truly fragrant....although it is fresh and charming rather than intense and heavy. There is a climbing version as well, but the little floribunda is a classic landscape rose and perfect in a mixed planting.
