Productive gardening day

Today was the first day I spent hours in the garden. Winter has kept me out of the dirt for a while now, but the weather today was beautiful. Prime gardening weather. I got my bands potted up, cuttings were culled, herbs were planted, bulbs were dug in, black-footed daisies finally went into the beds, and the back porch got cleaned up. The rose pot ghetto was rearranged, deeply water (I was playing it brave with the watering, this should've happened sooner), and I trimmed the frost damage off the herbs and roses.

With all of the winter gloom, I forgot how gardening can make one feel so accomplished and peaceful. Even in the midst of finding out my brother's tour in Afghanistan will be extended, and the resulting anger that broke out in the house, the garden was quiet and the breeze was soft and inviting. With all the trouble my dad has given me about gardening lately, it was reassuring to be able to step outside and enjoy the silence and the welcoming.

Sometimes the garden feels more like home than my house does.

Lol! I also escaped the blaring idiot box re-hashing bad news & spent the day outside.

I dug Comte de Chambord out of the shady place it's sulked in & put it by the Mex. persimmon trees, grubbed out that area & filled a half barrel with the good leaf mold there. Then laid down cardboard & concrete pavers to make a walk & dumped the caliche from Comte's hole there.

Dug up a baby Talisman that's gotten walked on & put it back in a pot to grow up a bit. Dug up some fleabane daisies to ring around Comte's new place, also stuck in some liriope.

Wacked back the native asters, moved some rocks around & studied where I'm gonna dig out the next hole...

Now, after resting--watching just a bit of bad news & playing on the net--I'm gonna go whistle up some deer & feed them stale bread.
Mmmm, life is much better outside of the house :-)

RE: Productive gardening day

I spent part of the last two days outside in my snow boots and multiple layers of clothing watering my roses. We have not had any rain or snow since before Thanksgiving.

I even watered the roses where the crowns were covered by several inches of snow. The good news is that the roses are all looking better ... even those without any leaves ... lol.

Maybe it is the optimistic eye of the gardener that thinks those sticks are looking better.

Smiles,
Lyn

My garden saved me many times from despair.

I hope the war will be over very soon and everyone's loved ones will be back again. There are times I look up into the sky and think why do we have to have troubles between people when the world is so wonderful and we could all be happy in the short time we have to enjoy it. You are doing the wise thing by considering the beauty that lies before you.
