'nother book: "everblooming roses"

For those who garden in warm climates:

The Full Title is:
EVERBLOOMING ROSES
For The Out-door Garden of the Amateur

THEIR CULTURE, HABITS, DESCRIPTION, CARE, NATIVITY, PARENTAGE
With Authentic Guides To The Selection Of Everblooming Varieties of Roses

by
Georgia Torrey Drennan

Pub. date, 1912, N.Y., Duffield & Co.

There are very few copies of this book still in existence -- I suppose in the first place there probably weren't that many printed, and it's been since 1912.
I looked for a copy for YEARS, and when I found one, I rapidly snarfed it up. It's not only a great text on warm-climate roses -- it was written by someone for whom they were the roses of her present.

Anyhow -- I just heard from Bob Edberg (Limberlost Rose Books). He said, he has a copy in really great condition, and he will sell it (Did He say $60.?) I told him he could get more, but he said he probably could, but thinks you shouldn't try to squeeze out every possible dime.)

You can email to him at:
bob@oldroses.com

Go for it!

Drennan herself was an interesting woman, with a fascinating life story. She was a Mississippi River Plantation Belle, who grew up with roses. Her husband commanded the defence of Vickburg, for the Army of the Confederacy, and his letters to his wife from that post comprise the best history of that important civil war action.
After the war, her husband became a judge -- and they eventually re-located to New Orleans. Seems his status as a Hero of the Confederacy didn't help his relations with his peers, when he dealt fairly with people they scorned.

Drennan's descendants still live in New Orleans -- or at least, they did before Hurricane Katrina.

I once thought my climate was similar to that of NOLA and Mississippi and it is, but I don't have all that good soil from the mighty Mississipp...mine is just old prairie mud, some good old depleted cotton patch soil and a few areas where I have spent money by the dumptruck load enriching, and roses dwelleth there, save those my DH put out of their misery with the Roundup. Alas, it should be illegal for men to buy Roundup.

I agree that Roundup is a major menace.

The City here pays people to spray it, so it can flow into creeks, and on, into the ocean.

I guess the word hasn't gotten around much yet, but I read that recent research is showing it's carcinogenic too.

Full review of this book in the new Heritage Rose Foundation newsletter. And reprints are fairly readily available ($32.08 on Amazon)

I wanted a "real" one, though -- and I'm glad I held out for it.

Santa aka "Mr. Blue Jeans" surprised me with a copy of Georgia's book along with the whole series of Brent C. Dickerson's books. What a nice gift to research and read of the old roses we love so much! Wishing everyone the best of the New Year~

Yes, a "real" original is a great find! But nice to know the reprint is out there as well.

I was surprised when a real one showed up -- and grabbed it. I love it.

Cydney -- that was a great Xmas present!
