Your favorite hybrid perpetual

Since I only grow one, this will be an easy category for me, but I look forward to learning more about this category from your posts.

Since this is a smaller category (or at least I think it is), let's say what is your ONE favorite HP, with 1 Honorable Mention allowed (or 2 if you insist--LOL).

Mrs. John Laing--I don't have a really good picture of her, but this one at least captures her long gangly canes and her plump full-packed blooms.

OK--so what else does this category have to offer us?

Hi,

I do not have a photo to share, but thus far, La Reine is showing signs that it could be a winner in my garden. It is very healthy and highly fragrant.

Because of their excellent ability to rebloom in our warm climate, I really like 'Reine des Violettes' and 'Paul Neyron'.

Easy one for me. Marchase Boccella and Baronne Prevost. They love my area.

HPs are prone to BS in the PNW but Enfant de France is the best in my garden.

I only have two, Paul Neyron and Marchesa Boccella. I haven't had either long enough to really judge, but I'm very pleased with both so far. I'm hoping to find a spot to add Reine des Violettes one day.

La Reine easily

No troubles with disease and a huge spring show followed by occasional flowers and a nice fall show. The scent is right up with my best lemony damasks. The bush is a pretty shape and only needs a light summer trim to look tidy. If you are short on water, she will just remain shorter and stop flowering until fall. The red hips are lovely.

One I want to mention that does not get much attention and is very lovely is Paul's early blush. It's a light pink powderpuff that does not grow too tall or unruly. I had some others in this color that would proliferate every spring flush, but this one has not.

I can't say which is my favorite, since they all were planted only a few months ago, but my inventory of HPs is:

'Ferdinand Pichard' (grown as a climber against a fence)

'Georg Arends' (grown as a short climber against a deck railing, picked because it's thornless)

"Grandmother's Hat" (not yet planted...think I have a spot for Spring)

'Monsieur Boncenne' (middle-row of a bed)

'Paul Neyron' (back row, against lower part of deck with no railing, picked because it's thornless)

'Pierre Notting' (middle-row of a bed)

'Reine des Violettes' (grown as a climber against a deck railing, picked because it's thornless)

'Souvenir du Dr. Jamain' (grown as a climber against my front porch railing)

"Yolande d'Aragon" (middle-row of a bed)

I'll have to get back to you next year (at the earliest) before I can say which is my favorite.

'Marchesa Boccella' (which is called something else here in Italy) is looking very fine. I think this one is close to the Damask Perpetuals, an endearing class, reblooming but with an old rose look, and highly fragrant.

Three of my four HP's are favourites in that class and I can't decide between Alfred Colomb, Duchesse de Rohan and Reine des Violettes. All plants are 10 years old. They are reliably remontant, flower profusely and are cold hardier than many damasks in my Swedish garden.

Marquesa Boccella (or Jaques Cartier, as I know it) seems to have an infinitely elastic nomenclature - I have always regarded it as a Portland, a funny sort of in-between class.

I'm with Malcolm. Reine des Violettes and Paul Neyron have done very well for me, even in our heat. I regard both of them highly.

Randy, I so hope you're right about RdV since I've ordered it. Do you think it will do well with morning sun only, against a light wall? I've resisted buying this rose for years but Marissa at Greenmantle Nursery said she had some nice, sturdy specimens and I succumbed. Betty Prior will have to go since I have no other semishady spot, but not until afterthe spring flush, which is the only time that Betty pulls up her socks enough to put on a show. I don't have a single rose right now with that lavender-purple coloring and I'm looking forward to seeing it as I walk out the front door.

Grandmother's Hat is probably my favorite even though it is bs prone here. It puts out a lot of new leaves and just keeps going, blooming quite often in big flushes. It's just gorgeous and very fragrant. Has great vigor.

Vick's Caprice comes in second. Also gets BS but a little later in the season. Reblooms well.

Yolande d'Aragon is so gorgeous, it makes the bs a footnote.

General Jacqueminot ...very fragrant

Paul Neyron reblooms well here, huge blooms

I like Marchessa Boccella but all spent blooms remain on the plant like old beige Kleenex. Still it has a lot of energy to bloom and grow.

Grandmother's Hat is my only HP, but it's very new and hasn't bloomed yet. It seems to be asleep now. Looking forward to spring.

RE: Your favorite hybrid perpetual

I have the Barrone, 3 of them actually. They bloom well, but I get octopus arms and blackspot. I love the color and fragrance though.

I also love Pierre Notting. I wish it bloomed more.

I just wanted to add that 'Souvenir du Dr. Jamain' was virtually unscathed by blackspot in its first year -- and is still clothed in fresh-looking green leaves, despite the cold weather.

Enfant de France looks like a must have.
