I was wondering if anyone know about growing Damask roses in Texas. I know many of the OGR like a decent amount of winter chill to do their best. I see that Antique Rose Emporium sells a few, but that doesn't necessarily mean they flourish. Josh

possible the autumn damask, bifera? However, while they don't require the numerous chilling hours of certain fruits (apples, cherries), they certainly do need a short sharp spell of dry freeziness to initiate bud formation. I have none (because I am not keen) apart from the little damask/rubiginosa hybrid, Hebe's Lip, so would hope more experienced growers to chime in with more info.

If your zone is truly 8a in terms of average minimum temps you should have no problem with any of the once flowering OGRs, I believe. Some of these can flower quite well even in my climate but that would greatly depend on the particular year. A bit north and inland from were I live or in a somewhat higher altitude (I'm at 400 feet altitude about 500 yards from the sea) where zone should be nearer to 9a or 8b, damasks and other once flowering 'European' roses have no problem growing well. I planted Ispahan this year having heard that it's 'tolerant' of warmer climates and I have a gallica and a couple of albas, ambitiously planted last year, which I'm waiting to see how they'll do this spring. I can grow some pear varieties where I live and some prunes but apples are mostly out and cherries are a no-no. Nik
