When to start my hot beds

I have always had a veg. garden or helped my father when I was a child. It was some thing that he did with me and I did with my son. Now I have a 6 year old grand child who enjoys getting her hands dirty. But she had a teacher say they start thier plants in a hot bed. So I have some old windows that I am building two hot beds (36"X60") with an apex roof. But need to know when to start the seeds, how much water, sunlight, and everthing else about starting seeds in a hotbed. Is it better to have the beds on the ground or can I put them up on legs so I don't have to bend over all the time.

Fun topic,
I have read a lot about this in the past, but brain fog is ...
The main thing I remember for sure is you have to vent it out on unseasonbly warm days.Just proped open a couple of inches I think.
I imagine a search would get a ton of info about hotbeds.Maybe even spacifics for your area.
Best of luck to you and your little gardener! I garden with my grandkids,too.What a blast.

Maybe your granddaughter would like a "mini hotbed" of her own using winter sowing in an old milk or pop bottle?
