Growing Gloriosa from Seed

Hi, Here's my experience: I tried growing Gloriosa in the UK with poor results and little flowering. Now I live in South Africa and have had more success. Here are my tips:

I live in Johannesburg at an altitude of 2000m similar to Zimbabwe where the plants originate from. We have warm wettish summers and cool dry winters. I have bulbs growing outside which did not survive the winter (or were eaten by bugs). I have bulbs growing in large pots outside which I put under cover once the plant dies back in autumn and I do not water them again until spring once the danger of frost is past. These plants do not grow very high but flower prolifically and all of them have set seed. I also have two plants growing in a conservatory. These plants emerge sooner than the outside plants and grow to about 2m in hight. They flower profusely but only one flower set seed and even then the seeds were weak. In the past I have germinated seeds by planting them (including the reddish flesh) in trays of potting soil soon after harvesting with about a 65% germination rate.

I have just harvested seeds from 4 seed pods (about 100 seeds) and am going to experiment with alternative ways of germinating them e.g. removing the flesh, letting them dry out etc... I shall keep you posted as to my success (or not)

The important things to remember are:

1) They prefer to be pot bound and shouldn't be replanted too often
2) I use normal potting compost as medium but I have them growing in normal clayish garden soil.
3) Keep the almost totally dry in winter. In southern africa we have only a few days of rain throughout the 4 months of winter
4) The tubers and all other parts of the plant are very poisonous so wash your hands carefully after handling

Nigel
