Easy way to bottom water trays

Posted by grow-anything (My Page) on

I had trouble watering last year so I decided to try something different. This year I used two trays for all my seedlings. The top one has holes in it but the bottom one doesn't. I just lift the top tray that has the seedlings out and fill the bottom tray about 1/4 full. Then set the top tray back in it. Made it a lot easier for me.

Oh yeah, not only that, but they make mesh bottom 1020 flats, too! Check out the link below to see what I'm talking about; the nice thing about the mesh flats is you can pull them out and set them up in front of a fan and get real good circulation all the way around. Much easier than taking each little peat pot in and out every time, isn't it?? :)

Here is a link that might be useful: Example of mesh flat

Yeah, I use some of the mesh flats too. I saved them from buying plants here and there. I have all kinds of seed starting flats laying around.

I just leave one compartment open in my tray and water through it, as to not disturb the other seedlings. I use a variety of plastic trays from a 90+ tray down to a 18 tray with a 1020 (with no holes) trays underneath. This works quite well. Quick an easy :)

The directions that come with Pro-Mix BX with Biofungicide seed starting mix says don't bottom water, only top water. Something about causing uneven distribution of nutrients if you bottom water.

I don't use any seed starting mix that contains fungicide. I do mix fungicide with water and spray that on the top of the soil and the plants themselves after they get started.

I see you are using those Jiffy peat pot trays.

How do you like them?

It looks like you have a lot of water in the bottom (but the stick keeps it from laying in it?).

Have you found it hard to regulate water? Are they sturdy?

Actually the stick was just laid in the tray by accident. I like the trays, but they are not real sturdy. When you double them they get much stronger. I even use the clear cover under them after I remove it and that makes them triple thick. I think I may have just watered that tray when I took the photo. As soon as they all sprout I move them from the lights to my mini-greenhouse.
