When to start larkspur seeds indoors?!

Hi everybody!

This year I bought a packet of larkspur giant imperial seeds. I decided it would be best to start them indoors because here, in saint louis, the spring heats up into summer quickly. I did some research and found many VERY different answers on when to sow them! Some said 12 weeks before the last frost date while others said 6 weeks and some even said it's best to sow them outside after last frost date. Any idea when's the best time?!? Any help would be appreciated!!! =0)

How soon to start them all depends on if you have the necessary equipment to grow them inside - seed starting mix, small containers, a supplemental light source, the ability to transplant them into larger containers as needed, potting mix with nutrients, etc. (see the FAQs here). Starting 12 weeks early and trying to grow them inside is far more complex then just planting them outside. ;)

If you don't have all that, then waiting to direct seed them outside after last frost date works best. And it is the easiest.

RE: When to start larkspur seeds indoors?!

Larkspur is one of the plants that reseeds itself in the fall in my zone 6b PA garden. It did also in my zone 6 Cleveland garden. I suggest you try scattering some seed now where you want them to grow and let nature do it for you. I was out raking yesterday and see that some Larkspur is up and growing already. The frigid temps, snow, and ice to come won't hurt these seedlings. They'll hunker down and ride it out. If you want to use the belt and suspenders approach start some seed indoors as backup.

Just a note, if you have a heavy mulch down you won't get reseeding later this year. The mulch will keep the seed from coming into contact with the soil.

Good Luck.
