How early should I direct sow bush beans in Zone 5/6?

I grew a pack of bush beans last year and loved them. This year I bought three packs and want to try succession planting. My Dad tells me they like the cold to get started, so how early would you recommend direct sowing them? Is March to early? We usually still get freezes until mid May here. Thanks!

With all due respect to your Dad, bush beans are not a cool weather crop. They are a summer crop. In your zone that would probably mean direct seeding in June.

Planted too early - before the soil temps are at least 60 degrees - just leads to seed rot, not germination. And that 60 degree soil temp is the minimum required, 65-75 is listed as the ideal on all germination websites.

Maybe he's thinking of peas? Peas like cool weather, usually you plant them early, though I don't think they can take too hard a freeze.

Check with your county Cooperative Extension Office. They should have a vegetable planting chart listing the date ranges for planting in your area.
