Fall Flowers from seed

Hello! I really like Mums, but they have that sort of mass market feel to them because I see them everywhere during the fall. So, I am wondering what other flowers you plant either as companion plants to fall hardy mums or in place of them? I would like to try my hand at growing them from seed this year. Any suggestions (perennial to zone 5 or annual) much appreciated!

For fall flowers other than mums I have toad lily, black snakeroot, tall garden phlox, Russian sage, blue mist shrub, aster, buddleia (butterfly bush) and gaura/wandflower that bloom right up past the first few frosts. I grew alyssum via winter sowing and those were still blooming at Thanksgiving.
