direct sow site 'labeling' or delineation?

I've only recently begun trying to direct sow, in the past mainly planting store-bought transplants or winter sown seedlings. What gets me the most is keeping an eye on the site, seeing if they are coming up. You have to remove the mulch so the seeds can be sown, then weeds might come up, you want to weed them or hoe them, but the seeds are there.

I do have good labels so I know about where they are. But do any of you sort of make a border around the seeds or put cloches all around them or what? I am doing annuals, perennials, and veggies, but my veggies are easier becoz I have 2 raised beds in a special place for them. The flowers are in amongst other shrubs etc. I know I sound ignorant, I guess I am on this topic. Any advice?

I do noe of the above just sow & stand back..... You might get better answers from the GW forum on winter sowing....

Special marking? No. Don't over-complicate the process. ;) You are just used to seeing established plants in the area so when using seeds, patience is required.

Weed the spot well before planting, leave the mulch pulled back around the spot/area, do not weed the area until the plants are at least 3 inches tall so they are easy to tell apart from the weeds, then pull the weeds and put the mulch back in place.

lou--For slow starting seed sow a few turnip or radish in the same seed furrow-they germinate fast & you can cultivate close to row if necessary. Remove when you see intended crop
