First time growing Bhut Jolokia

Hello all!

This is my first season growing seeds inside. I live near Atlanta GA and have been gardening for many years but never from scrath starting indoors. Needless to say - I'm very excited. I have a variety of seeds planted, including the bhut jolokia seeds. After doing some reading online I have heard that the jiffy peat pellets are not ideal for the hot peppers. Right now they are planted in a medium of Miracle-Gro African violet dirt (it is what I had around) and a little bit of mushroom compost on top of the seeds. They are in a jiffy heated tray with the clear lid on top. Does this sound like a good start?

Also- they have a 4 foot florescent light hanging over them (I know that light is not important for germination but I have some seeds that already sprouted in another tray.)

When the peppers sprout and I remove the lid, should I keep the heat pad on? The seedlings are in my basement which is finished and kept around 66 degrees.

Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

my only sugestion is to remove the cover the seedlings will need good air circuation ... this will reduce the chance of damping off...... aalso soil temp shoulld be 75-80F therefor bottom heat will help.

RE: First time growing Bhut Jolokia

75-85 is needed for germination but once germinated the heat pad, along with the cover, is normally removed. As mentioned in several other discussions here continued heat makes the soil too hot for young tender roots and can cook them.

Once germinated plants prefer much cooler temps for growing on - avg. of 55-65 degrees is ideal as it produces stocky, sturdy plants with root systems that can support the top growth rather than long lanky plants with small root balls.
