Germ rates - maters - horticubes

The first part of my plans for tomato seedlings is looking good so far. A week ago, I sowed 208 Early Wonder tomato seeds. The first ones germinated on Wednesday. As of this morning, 178 of the 208 are up.

I don't have enough 1020 trays without holes to hold the horticubes trays so what I do is line them with plastic. This allows me to keep water in them as they do tend to dry out quickly, especially under a 600-watt MH. But they don't mind wet feet at all!

Next Saturday/Sunday I hope to start another 200, then 200 more the following week. After that, it will be time to get serious about starting seeds!

Mike

I start tomatoes in cellpacs, two seeds per cell. If both seeds grow I clip off one at ground level. It is almost impossible to get a vacant cell. Al

Al,

I would have wasted at least 180 seeds - nearly a third of my order. If I had to do that, I would but I can live with 86 percent germ rates!

I always germinate my seeds in a seed flat over heat. I'll transplant them into cell packs after that. No waste at all that way. And I get to use a much coarser medium for the transplants....they grow like mad once they are in that stuff.

rhizo,

How many plants do you grow?

Rhizo_1 - When you use the seed flat do you use a standard Seed Starting mix or do you start seeds with paper towles or some other trick?

I use Calistoga's method but once they are hearty enough to transplant I separate them out.

It sounds like everyone in this post is doing some type commercial production but myself I am only growing a few at a time for my garden and the extra's go to family.

Can you use horticubes in a similar setup as peat pellets/flatts ?
