Do I have a problem?

My tomatoes are doing great, almost. My seedlings are about 6 inches tall. On some of them the bottom leaves have turned yellow and fallen off, yet, there is new growth and they otherwise look healthy. Is this a major problem?

Not a major problem. You may have had them a bit too wet or maybe they need some fertilizer. Have you fertilized all? Usually those are the problems when leaves turn yellow. If it's too much water then let them dry out before you water again. Stick your finger in the soil and if it's wet 1 to 2 inches down they don't need water--The depth depends on the size of the pot. Plants 6" tall do require fertilizer, so if you haven't fertilized then do so. Get a water soluable tomato fertilizer and give them a half strength shot of it after you water the next time or now if the plant is wet enough. Never fertilize a dry plant because you can burn the roots.

i believe bottom leaves turning yellow and dropping is a result of lack of nitrogen.

Thank ya'll so much for your feedback. I have not fertilized the plants yet. I think I may have overwatered. I have read that lack of nitrogen could cause yellowing of leaves. How do I add more nitrogen? Thanks again!

Was it just the seedling leaves that fell off i.e. the plain little ovals not the lobed ones? If so it's not a problem. If the true leaves start falling off then something is wrong.

ricker-- If you haven't fertilized yet then that's your problem. Nitrogen is the first number on the fertilizer box. Give them the tomato fertilizer and all will be well. |

Oilpainter: Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping to plant this weekend and thought I'd put some 8-8-8 around the plants when I put them in the ground. Our weather in NE Mississippi has been wetter than usual and colder than usual, but it looks like nights will be staying above 50F. Let's hope for the best. Thanks again.
