the lettuce seedlings i have are about 1 1/2 inch tall now. they are 1 by 1 just tipping over at the base. looks like they basically just go limp. plenty of water, light, and took the tops of the pods today. ideas?

Why, oh why do people plant lettuce indoors. Lettuce is a cool season vegetable. It does very well planted outside. It can be planted outside when the soil is workable. It does not freeze unless there is a hard frost and even then may come through. It germinates well in cooler weather too.

I plant my leaf lettuce outside and it is just about ready to use when the rest of the garden goes in.

You may have given it too much water and the humidity tray kept it in. They are in the stage of damping off

Dampening off disease.

I planted lettuce (mesclun mix) inside (I'm new, I didn't know any better!), and they did fine. As soon as they started sprouting I removed their dome and put them under the lights. They are fully bushy and beautiful now, healthy as can be. Going to start hardening off soon... hope for the best. Hope I can get something edible out of them before it gets too hot. It's looking good so far.

You needed to take the top off when they sprouted.

Yep. Damp-off. feethanddooth - You said in another post you were going to leave your plastic dome on despite all the advice to the contrary. I assume these the seedlings that were under that dome since you have only the 1 tray?

I thought to myself when you said that we'd be hearing from you about them going limp and falling over. Sorry for your loss. But is the bit of convenience a dome provides to the grower really worth the loss?

ok, thanks to those who posted helpful words.

oilpainter3, get over it. im new i didnt know any better. sorry?

digdirt, you could have left the last part of your post out.

people here need to be helpful to each other, not criticize.

feethanddooth... they did help you a few posts ago, but you had decided to not do what they suggested...so they/we are just making the point... If you ask for help and don't partake in the suggestions than the outcome may be less favorable, such as yours.

You ask for help and then don't like it.

Oilpainter is correct, lettuce should be direct sown and not started under lights because you are a new grower and it is hard to keep lettuce happy inside.

It takes a lot more than a seed and soil to grow plants inside. You need to mimic mother nature as best as possible.. sun, wind, water, air, soil and temps.

Just call your lettuce an experiment and a learning experience. We all have made mistakes... now you are learning what to do and what not to do for later.

Yes I suppose I could have but you did ask and we did answer and you chose to ignore the advice given despite at least 4 or more of the same opinion. You did the same thing with all the advice you were given on lights and now you have a bunch of leggy seedlings as a result. So can you honestly blame us for feeling we might be wasting our time and effort?

Now I see you have another post up "what should you do with the cover? since people are telling me to take it off "the SECOND" they germinate what happens to the remaining pods that havent popped through the "soil"?"

and that too is discussed here in several posts one with almost the same title. You remove it anyway. The rest will germinate just fine or they never would have anyway. If the surface of those remaining cells starts to dry out, just mist it a bit to keep it moist so the seedling can break through.

Please don't get me wrong. We enjoy helping folks here but when they turn around and either ignore the answers they get or argue with the help we try to give and do just the opposite it sure makes it difficult to keep on trying to help them.
