Starting seeds on fireplace hearth, I like it! Just sharing!

I'm remodeling my Parents old house with plans to move in next year.

It has an old fireplace with a ventless gas stove in front of the fireplace which is sealed up. And in another room it has ventless gas logs.

I have the thermostat set at 50 degrees to keep the water pipes from freezing. I noticed that the mantels and rock always feel warm to the touch even when the heat hasn't came on in hours. The mantels are 4" thick, 16" wide, 10' long, and made of solid wood.

So long story short, I started some seed there. Just small samples with my extra seed. Too early for tomatoes, squash, and pepper. But I wanted to give it a try before my main seeds need to be started.

Cabbage, broccoli, and yellow squash came up in 4 day's, tomatoes and peppers in 7 days.

I'm sure that when we move in "sweethang" will nix this. She already doesn't like it! But I will be starting my seeds there this year!

Plus it may be too hot when I bring the heat up close to 70.

Edited cause this big old dummy typed hearth instead of mantels! LOL

Cool. We got to use whatever works and new ideas are a blessing.

Would have loved to have a couple of warm hearths 3 nights ago when the temps were 26 and the power went out in the GHs at 3:30 am and the power company failed to put out the phone alerts!

I started them on the mantels Dave. My mind was out of whack, I've got a broke rib and taking Lortab for pain. I typed hearths instead of mantels. A wood hearth wouldn't work out so good! LOL

I'm going to use the hearths too when I start the rest of my seed.

I hope you didn't loose anything when the power went out Dave!

They don't call here when we have a power outage, we have to call them.

I know immediately when I have one thanks to my computers UPS. It beeps loudly!
