Tomatoes under Florescent Lighting? How early

Posted by connecticutbug Connecticut (My Page) on

I'm starting my tomatoes this year on heat mats and then want to nurture inside under fluorescent lighting until they are old enough to go outside.

How early should I start my seeds? My last frost date this year (In Connecticut) is May 11th.

Should I be starting them 6 to 8 weeks before this last frost date? Will the tomatoes be able to grow well under 2 fluorescent bulbs for that much time without risking getting too tall or leggy?

Any tips appreciated.

Mine are already up and been transplanted 2 times. I will have tom's around the 4th of July instead of late August. I am in zone 4/5 and our season is to short for some Tom's and peppers. They are now out in the greenhouse waiting for the day they go out in the garden, under walls of water at first. Works great for me here. I start them in late Feb. Peppers as well.

Thanks for the tips. You my friend have a greenhouse, and I do not. That is where my question comes into play.

From what I am gathering it sounds like most start their seeds 8 weeks prior to last frost for peppers and eggplant, and 6 weeks for tomatoes. I'll probably go with those numbers and see how it does.

Anyone with experience think this is too much time indoors with keeping the plants under standard 2 light fixture 32watt T5 bulbs? I don't want them to get leggy so that's my main concern.

If you look at my thread *BIG* seedlings pictures, the tomatoes in the picture were planted 1.29. Plenty big to go outside now.

I would start yours in the next 2 weeks.

I started my tomatoes last week. I don't have a green house.
