limp seedlings

I sowed some seeds on March 6 in a covered tray: eggplant, jalapeno, bell pepper, banana pepper, coleus and impatients. They are all doing pretty well since I put them under a grow light. The thing is this is the first time I've started seeds in this house... last year I had a green house like room to start in. I was unaware that you are supposed to uncover the seedlings once they show up... so I left the cover on and they are fine. Once I take the cover off for about 10 minutes the leaves start to go limp, curl up and look terrible. But if I replace the cover, in about 10-20 minutes they start to perk up. What's with that?! The stems are fine, the room temp is about 65 and I have the lid slightly propped for ventilation. I just am worried about taking the cover off for too long... I don't want them to die! Ideas? Suggestions? Words of wisdom?

RE: limp seedlings

Almost sounds like the soil may be a little too dry, could that be the case? If so, try watering (from the bottom if you can). Then, gradually prop the cover open more and more over a 24 hour period until you can remove it completely without the seedlings going limp. I assume you don't have them on a heat mat, if so turn that off. The 65 degree room temperature sounds about right.

RE: limp seedlings

When you take the cover off the plants start transpiring away the moisture in their foliage and they wilt. When the cover is on the humidity is 100% and they don't transpire. The moisture to keep the plant and foliage turgid is provided by the roots. The problem can be soil that is too dry or even too wet. Correct the soil moisture and open the cover gradually as art suggested. Al

RE: limp seedlings

Thanks, plant friends. I think the soil was possibly too wet. I appreciate the advice.
