Differentiation of Heirloom Tomato Mix

I was really excited at obtaining a $1.00 heirloom tomato seed mix containing Omar's Lebanese, Dutchman, Golden Sunburst, Black Russian, and Djena Lee's Golden Girl.

There is a slight problem though - I have no idea which seeds are which! I have a limited amount of space for tomato growing, and there are close to 50 seeds in the packet.

Any ideas for identifying either the seeds or young plants as to each variety? Or should I just plant a lot and hope that all the varieties come up?

The only thing I can think of is to search wheather the individual plants are regular leaf or Potato leaf.
At least you will be able to differentiat a little :)
I have a bunch of seedlings from 9 different varieties in my garage that are about 7 weeks old. The different varieties have slightly different looks, but there is no way to tell which is which...well except because I labeled each container :0)

Plant them all. I bought the same seed packet you did and planted the whole packet 13 days ago. I only ended up with 20 or 25 decent looking plants out of the whole thing. I just ran and grabbed a picture for you. Soon I plan on pricking them from the tray and transplanting them into cells. I too was excited to get this mixture of heirlooms, I like mystery and surprises.

Here is a link that might be useful: Heirloom Mix - 13 days

I have the same problem with the 'carnival mix' of pepper seeds. I picked 4 different-looking seeds (as best as I could distinguish) and all 4 germinated, but one seedling got attacked by aphids, so I am not sure which color pepper that one was.

Thanks for all your help. I will try to differentiate between the seeds (size, slight color differences) plant a bunch, and get back to you. I've also enlisted some friends (to whom I will be giving away tomato seedlings) to help me with this experiment :)

That is the problem with seed collections such as this - simply no way to tell which is which until you get fruit or different leaf shapes. Seed size and/or color can't really tell you as the same variety of tomato can seeds that are very different in size and color.

But they are still a bargain and most who post about trying them are pleased with the results - even if they never find out which is which. ;)

It's a bargain way to discover some of the heirloom varieties.

With my pack of burpee heirloom mix I ended up with 24 seedlings that made it. I do notice some differences in seedling size and leaf shape. I too have some people in mind to help me grow them. I'm hoping I can pick one or two of each by looking at the plant differences.

Digdirt, in this case we should be able to distinguish between tomatoes because they are all different colors.

Yes, once you get fruit as I said above they can be sorted out. Till then the only difference is potato leaf vs. regular leaf. ;)

Unfortunately in this case, Omar's, Djena Lee's, Golden Sunburst, and Dutchman are all regular leaf. Can't say for sure about Black Russian but I 'think' it is regular leaf too.

Last year, I got a wonderful Golden Sunburst out of a packet like that. That tomato was tasty and prolific. Good luck!

I just bought the same pack! I started them, and so far almost all of them are up..
I was looking for info on the golden sunburst and found this posting...
I was wondering the same thing..how I was going to be able to tell the difference between them..
I guess between everyone, we should figure it out...
This is only the second time I have done heirloom seeds..the other time being oxheart seeds my mom saved for me from tomatoes she bought at a festival...they were fabulous
