Growing from Seed

Confused about starting plants ahead of last frost.

Hi im relatively new to gardening and i have a question, on the back of most seed packs its says "Start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost" Well my last frost is May 17th and now i have a bunch of 3-5 inch seedlings im wondering if its safe to leave them outside during the day or do they have to stay inside until the last frost day. Some plants i plan to put in a bed(after last frost?) and others are going to stay in the containers.
