watering from below question

I am wondering about watering from below. I have the black trays with black insterts.

Are you supposed to saturate the whole thing and then let them drip dry or are you supposed to water and avoid letting the individual cups soak up enough water to get the top of the soil wet?

The later is hard for me to do. I either do too little or end up getting the top wet anyway.

Thank you

I routinely water seedlings from the bottom. I set the tray in the water and leave there until the top of the mix looks shiny, then take it out and put back on the rack to drain. Al
