 o
sedum seed viability

Hello,

I have had a Sedum for two years. I am now trying to plant some seeds from it as well as possibly trade some of the seeds. I want to properly identify the seeds and have an idea of judging their viability. Especially for he ones I send to my trading partner. I have searched the internet and Garden Web for some help in this matter but have been unsuccessful.

I have tried to identify the exact species in Hortiplex but can not - I guess I need more searching - but it is the kind that has the deep red heads in the fall.

My problem is that I have been going through the flower / "seed head" and have not been able to identify what looks like good seeds. Seems to be mostly chaff. Also you should know that I did leave the flowers on the plant all winter and only harvested it a week ago.

Could anyone out there tell me what good sedum seeds look like?
Point me to other resources to identify them?
Also any other tips on Sedum propagation would be helpful – I have seen some references to fairly easy propagation from leaves and stems.

Thank You

Denis

We have cut off the stems, put them in the ground and they grow. Don't know about the seeds.

I received some seeds from a trade that looked like dusty chaff, they are now germinating. If your sedum happens to be Autumn Joy, I have read that those seeds are sterile. I know I have never had seedlings from my plant. Doesn't take much to grow a sedum from a cutting though, & you can mail small cuttings in a padded envelope at little expense.

The tall sedum "Brilliant" will grow from seed and selfseeds every year in my garden. It has a more lilac coloured flowerhead than the red one you have which is probably "Autumn Joy". I've never had "A.Joy" self seed and have never tried to grow it from seed because it starts SO easily from cuttings. Just break off a piece, stick it in the ground or a pot and it will grow roots quite quickly.

does anyone have any sedum cuttings or seed to sell?
