I started my cukes inside from seed. They were in containers for just under 2 weeks. Transplanted 1 week ago and now a few of them have gotten stringy white stems and are dying. Help?

Hey Walla, You should post some pictures of your cucumbers and information on where they've been transplanted to (soil type, outdoors, containers). Any extra bit of information will help out. Tony

Were they well hardened off before transplanting? If not, that is the problem and they likely won't survive. You have plenty of time to start new ones and they work better when directed seeded anyway. They don't really tolerate transplanting well. Dave

I used a mixture of compost, soil, and regular dirt (same stuff I started them in) I hardened them off for about 5 days, with out issue. But as soon as I transplanted them they just went wonky. I dont have a camera at this time so i cant post pictures. I started last years straight in the soil, and had no problem, but with the very long winter season I wanted to get a jump on planting and now i feel like I murdered them.

Are you using grow lights? I starts seeds in a looser mix, either seed starting mix or a potting soil vermiculite mixture, it makes it easier for the roots to spread. Usually leggy plants are stretching to get light, it is important to keep seedlings 2-3 inches under a florescent light.

They were under grow lights. not very far from the light, but I moved them outside before the stretching began. I now have maybe 4 seedlings that are alive. The others shriveled and died. i said screw it and planted new seeds straight into the ground.
