Problems w/ 5-week-old peppers and tomatoes (and broccoli and...)

I don't think these guys are doing so well, but I can't tell since this is the first time I've ever grown anything from seed (and only the second time I've ever grown anything at all!).

About 10 days ago, I transplanted my peppers and tomatoes into Miracle-Gro organic potting soil. A few days later, my tomatoes starting getting dry and curly at the very tops, and some of the leaves were yellowing. They were right up against the grow lights and we were having beautiful weather here (80s and sunny), so I brought everybody outside for some fresh air. They stayed curly for a few days and the branches started to droop and curl under too. Now they're starting to perk up a bit, but the leaves are yellowing. And the lower leaves on my peppers are yellowing now too. They soil isn't soaking wet, but it's nice and moist to the touch.

I'd think it was the soil, but my friend used the same soil (her own bag) for her tomatoes, and they're ginormous. I also used the same soil for my herbs and they're very happy and growing like mad in their sunny little corner.

Also, if you're looking anyway, can someone take a look at my broccoli and cauliflower? I accidentally waited too long to transplant them, and while they're growing tall, I'm not sure if they're too spindly to bear anything useful.

If you've gotten this far, thank you for looking!

Oh darn, I thought those links would be clickable. My apologies!

The yellowing means you burned them -- they were insufficiently hardened. You need to introduce your plants to the outdoors more gradually.

Your brassicas are fine. Plant them in a sunny place (brassicas love light!) and they'll leaf out plenty.

Oh no! I thought I'd be OK bringing them out quickly because it was so hot and sunny. For some reason I thought hardening off was mainly to get them accustomed to cooler weather--though now that I think back, I don't know why that was in my head. Will they survive it, do you think? Or have I ruined them?

And thank you for the feedback on the brassicas. I thought I damaged them beyond saving. I'll make sure they get plenty of sun.

Thank you!

Looks to me like you need to plant them in bigger containers or in the garden.

Thanks tripsleb. You're right, I do. They're getting little root blisters, so I know I have to go deeper. I didn't realize I can pinch off the lower leaves and go really deep until I was researching this issue last night. I'll be doing that this weekend, and then putting them into their full-size containers. It's still a bit early here (NJ), but I can pull them into the garage at night if I need to.

Thank you!

I assumed that bellamama was planning to plant them. You are planning to, right?

In general, hardening disorders include:

* Yellowing: Exposed to bright sun too quickly
* Purple: Exposed to too much cold, too soon
* Limp: Hurting from one of several factors (too cold, too leggy, too much rain, too much wind, etc)

Brassicas can survive just fine being a lot leggier than that. You can have them be so leggy that they're pretty much growing along the ground, but if you get them light, and they don't die within a few days of doing so, they'll recover and you'll end up with a slightly L-shaped brassica ;)

No need to panic; your plants should be fine. Give them no more than a half day of direct sunlight for now and increase it to a full day perhaps Monday-ish. Just keep an eye on them; if they get any yellower than that, cut back on the sunlight.

You could try growing them in pots this size, but I'd expect their growth to be stunted. It'd be better if they were in larger pots or the ground.

Thanks!

Oh, Karen, we posted at the same time! It's going to be dreary here for the next few days, so keeping them out of the sun should be no problem :-)

Thanks for all the extra info. I'm writing it in my notebook right now! And yes, they're going into good-sized pots this weekend. I'm not supposed to have them out permanently until after Mother's Day, but with the pots, I can bring them when I need to.
