It's just my personal opinion, but I think starting chard indoors, under light is a waste of time and energy. They can be planted outdoors quite early, even in zone 5, and do quite well. Plant some outside now, and I bet they will catch up to your indoor ones quickly.

Yay! Another excuse to plant seeds! :) I'll do it tomorrow. I was just so antsy this winter. Started morning glories inside too. They're getting way too big, and I'm not sure they can be put out yet. You think they'd survive?

Swiss Chard will self seed. Let a few of the plants go to seed and pull them out and walk around your yard smashing the plant on the ground, knocking the seeds off. Next year your yard will have Swiss Chard coming up all over the place like a weed.

I also grew mine indoors (and they do get a little leggy,even when touching the lights),I have never winter sowed them (I might try that next year), but I think the only difference between yours and mine is ,I put mine in the garden a couple of weeks ago, and you are still waiting for "the perfect time" to set them out,but if what these other guys are telling you is correct,PLANT THEM OUTSIDE NOW ;-)

I just direct sewed my chard seeds today. I am going to see how the seedlings inside do, and use them as my back up. I don't know why I just didn't direct seed in the first place. :P
