Hi Hummergirl, all I have to say about your set up is DAYYYYMMMMM that's nice! I'm a complete beginner seed grower and finding it enjoyable. Mine are just sprouting and it's fun watching them pop up. I'll post pics soon. I liked your cool labels and dates. Nice rack and lights. I have a similar rack but it's way smaller.

epic laydown, I love growing from seed. I started three years ago and every year I keep finding more things to start from seed. I have had many, many mistakes but I am still learning a lot. My favorite part is watching the seeds shoot up out of the soil, it warms my heart! :) And every year I tell myself I will be better, and every year I come face to face with another list of things I screwed up, oh well at least I am having fun! Good luck on you seedlings! And make sure to laugh at all the successes and failures! ha ha

Did you sneek into my house and take that picture of the rack. It looks exactly like my setup. I've been adding on every year. More lights and this year bought a few heat matts. So far the heat matts are working great the seeds sprouted in a couple of days. My wave petunias always grow slow and stay relatively small when inside. Once I harden them off ,re-pot and put in nice hot sun they take off. This year I'm having some trouble with begonia's. I'm trying angel wing with pelleted seed and parks wopper red non pelletted seed. I have a couple angel wings coming up but most are not germinating. The parks wopper seed was like dust. It looks like there is a few with very tiny plants starting but they are not growing. Maybe the temp really needs to get hotter for them to get going.

I haven't updated in a while, but here's my blog of starting seeds indoors.. mine are taking off as well, so I'll try to update soon. Thanks for sharing your pictures! And my tidal wave petunias are about the same size as yours, too! I passed by a nursery today on the way home and saw HUGE ones...hopefully mine can grow up to be that way soon! I need more lights in my setup...I thought two would be enough..I aspire to have a setup like yours next year! :)

Hummer_girl, those look gorgeously healthy! Great job. I'm being hounded just for germinating in the basement. I'd have them closer if I could...LOL. Congrats!
|
The rack looks just like mine, got it at Home Depot. That's where I got my lights, too. Very cool setup.

The rack came from Lowes, it was only $89! A definate help for SURE. I been taking a little out of my grocery money each week to buy this setup. My poor hubby sometimes had fish sticks and mac and cheese for dinner instead of a hearty Steak! ha ha. But after he saw the difference in the growing of my seedlings from years before, and compared them to this years there was no argument on whether or not the shelves with lights helped! Thanks to all of you who been posting on this forum. I honestly forgot about it, thinking no one would post, I am glad I was wrong. It is so fun to share pictures and information on gardening! Kiee 8, Real Organized/ Five Tier Shelving Unit I bought the light fixtures from walmart they are $15 dollars each and they have a pull cord to turn them off(without having to unplug them). and chains so you can adjust them.

Hummer girl, I purchased a rack like that on sale today at Menards but I think it only has 4 shelves. I hope to get it all rigged up with the lights soon. It will be wonderful to have everything together and not have flats under flourescents hung in random spots from the basement to the upstairs. Maybe I should promise to post a photo by the weekend...might be just the incentive I need to get mine looking like yours! Your seedlings look great! Glad you shared the photos.

hummergirl, your seedlings are so healthy! I'm in zone 9b and my winter sown plants aren't anywhere near the size of your babies grown under lights! Can't wait till my Petunias babies are that big... they are just tiny green specks right now.

Naturegirl 2007, You won't regret your shelves! I wished I started with this set-up a long time ago! oh well' live and learn. I would love to see your set-up when you have it. alwaysgarden, My petunias were specks forever it seemed! Then within a short period of time they got really big! It is so great to finally see them bigger and not have to worry about killing them so easy with there small size.

Your plants are beautiful, they look very health and like they are very lovingly tended. Thank you for providing the information on the shelfing, its very interesting. The kits sold for this purpose are much more expensive. Could you give some info on how the chains are set up and how they are adjusted. Next year maybe you should try planting some lettuce and maybe a tomato or 2, to make a home grown salad to go along w/ your husbands steak. Good gardening, Mary

You're seedlings look great! I planted my petunia seeds right around the time you posted this and they are still really, really TINY! I've just transplanted some of them and I'm hoping they get even that big soon...the leaves are no bigger than a pin head!

I start mine in ferry morse soiless seed starting mix then I transplant them into Organic pro-mix with sea based fertilizers. I also fertilize with 1/4 the reccomended amount with Neptunes Harvest fishemulsion and seaweed fertilizer. Seems to be working so far however Tomatoes need more like1/2 strenth to full strength to keep them going! gardener Mary, Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond, I been outside enjoying the garden instead of being online! I'll try and be better!! :)

My seedlings seem small compared to other photos I've looked at. We went for nearly two weeks straight with heavily overcast skies...and I have no lights! This is my first year working with seed and only my third year gardening, so I figure I'm allowed some screw ups ;o) But I definitely have enjoyed the process and have learned a lot, so I'll be doing it again next year! Verbena...these got really leggy, but once I pinched them back and gave them some sun, they started to fill out. Verbena makes me so happy! Scarlet Cardinal Climber...they were doing pretty good and then sort of went limp. I repotted them and they are doing a little better Moonflower vine...started these way too early! One actually wrapped itself around one of my dahlia seedlings yesterday. Dahlias...my favorite annual. I thought they looked pretty good until I went to the greenhouse. Then I realized they looked pretty leggy and wimpy in comparison. I hope they bloom! Impatiens seedlings. These grew really fast at first, but now their progress is slllloooowwww.... Red "Fire Chief" Petunia...these are still pretty small, but wow, they are loving they hot sun and 80's & 90's...they are rapidly growing now...a little worried that they are a long time from blooming though.

I love flowers and plants but there so expensive,so I decided to buy seeds of all the kinds I like,I tried the jiffy peat pellets and started indoors, but nothing sprouted up,so I brought them out to more sunlight, then some sprouted and alot didn't.the ones that sprouted I transplanted to the flower beds, but then they disappeared, what am I doing wrong?
