Pinching back Petunia seedlings?

Posted by mandolls 4WI (My Page) on

I am growing Petunias for the first time. I have read that they will benifit from pinching to make them fuller bushier plants. Mine are only about 2 1/2" tall and are already shooting off nice runners. Does it make sense to pinch them? I assume the pinching would be from the top growth, not the runner tips?

Advice from experienced petunia growers would be appreciated.

Most pinching occures on the mail stem but will be effective on the runners. Since the plants seem to be compact & have runners i would leave them alone.

I actually pinched off the runners last year and rooted them. They WAY out performed the mother plant.

I would pinch the center and then pinch off the runners just after a leaf node.

Thanks - I was thinking about rooting some of the runners. I am concerned that its a little late in the season to start them, but maybe I can just think of it as a late crop.
