most castor bean seeds rotted

I sowed them May 8. Did I sow them too early? I am only seeing 3 seedlings. During those days, our nightly temp was 40ish. Are they goners?

Should I order new seeds again? :(

How deep should they really be sowed?

Thanks!

lightly cover the seed with soil .... soil temperature 75-80F for germination....not 40 ish.... takes 15-21 days to germinate... so if you need more that 3 plants will need to order more....

ah, that's my problem then. I sowed them 1" deep. I wish someone here can trade some seeds of red castor bean seeds. :D

Thanks for the guidance!

Hmmm, I saw more sprouts yesterday. I have total of 7 sprouts now! Woohoo! I'm so happy because the ones that sprouted are in the areas I was really expecting them to grow. I also put some on areas that are just ok. No sprouts yet though. I'll keep you posted. :D

I hope you gave them plenty of room to grow. They get quite big, mine was about 10 ft high. After they get the seed pods you need to watch that you take them off as they start to ripen or you'll have them all over the neighborhood. I started mine in strofoam cups and as soon as they popped up planted them out where I wanted them. They grow very fast.

I start my seeds in 16oz cups outside in late May. They really do need warmth to germinate so I keep the pots in full sun and bring them inside if the night temps get too low as the seeds tend to rot if too chilled. They germinate in 7-10 days. When they get true leaves I plant them out. Mine get 6-8' here in my zone 5 Ohio garden. My 12 plants are blooming now and will go until the first frost hits them. I collect seeds from the biggest plant each year for next season.

I started my castor beans in doors and they came up fast. I lost a few thru the weeks of wet rainy rainy (did I mention raily?) weather, but the rest are doing great. I have 3 on my deck in large pots and they look awsome! They're around 8 feet tall. Then I planted 3 down on the border of one of my perennial beds, and they are nearly 10 feet tall. Haven't seen any "beans" or seeds, just weird 'flowers' and fuzzy things. What do the seeds (beans) look like??
