I have cleome seedlings that are close to each other maybe about 2". Do you use any special tools for digging?

I like to use a chopstick. Rigid but narrow and with a tapered tip. I slide it deep under the plant and then push up, loosening the soil. I repeat this from different angles until the plant comes free without resistance.

A spoon. A fork, and sometimes a knife. Screwdrivers have come in handy as well.
