Hi ... we have a very peculiar event happening and are wondering if anyone can give us an explanation?

Ferris Morris Seeds ... Pumpkins and Squash ...

Were planted by seed and they sprouted BUT .. they sprouting so the leaves were growing INTO THE GROUND ... rather than UP out of the ground! My husband turned them around so hopefully they'll be OK but what on earth causes this????
