In Zone 8, we usually plant violas around October. My favorite viola is Johnny Jump Ups and sometimes they are not available at the local nursery so I would like to start some from seed this year. Can anyone give me any tips for sowing seeds for annuals that are cool weather plants? I can start them in seed trays in the house. Would mid July be the best time to start?

Thanks for any hlp.

Kathy

In this Z8, we can direct sow (surface, not covered) just about any time of year...cool summers, mild winters here. They are a plant-once-and-you'll-always-have-them type plant for me - self sowing.

"Sow February to March or June to September. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite, and keep at a temperature of between 59-68F. Germination will take 14-21 days. Take care not to provide too high a temperature, as this can prevent germination"

They will begin to bloom approx 12 weeks after sowing or in the neighborhood of 10 weeks from germination if that helps your timing.

Thanks for the help. We have hot weather in July & August so I think I'll start these mid-July (inside) so I can plant in October.
