| I have several, and I do mean several mirabilis jalapa (Four o' Clocks) that I started from seed this year. Some are doing great, while some seem to be growing slow. Some I have in big pots and others sowed directly in the ground. Some in the ground are great, while others are not so great. Same for the pots, some doing good and others seem to have come to a stand still.
I have some in full sun, pots and in ground, and some in about 6 hours worth of full sun (pots and in ground), the rest of the day bright shade. In one section, the ground is really hard, and sandy. They are doing fine, but it seems it takes so much water to soften the ground and they are growing so slowly. Last night I watered them a lot. I probably over watered them, but not sure yet. They just seem to not be growing as good as some of the others I have, and I treat them all the same. I always read to water deep, so I assumed that since that ground takes so much time to soak up water that I would give them extra water. I'm worried about yellow leaves. If that happens, how can I fix it? Also, some of mine have huge leaves, really wide, while others have smaller leaves and were planted at the same time. Some sprouted right out of the ground, and as they grew the first two true foilage was big leaves, others small and just seem to slow growth after they reach a certain point. I have some 3 feet tall, 2 feet tall, and others that are just over 1 foot tall. Why would they be growing so slow? As far as watering, depending on the height of a plant, is there any certain amount of water you could recommend based on height maybe? One last thing, some of my four o clocks wilt their leaves in full sun, but as soon as it is shade again they stand right back up. Should I be shading these during the time when the leaves look wilted. I just don't know what to do. I hate to start over, but those that are growing slowly, should I just move them somewhere else. They get full sun, but the ground seems hard, and instead of soaking up water, the majority of it just runs off and seeps in elsewhere unless I water super slow. Any advice at all? |
