growing ornamental kale from seed

I really want to save money and don't want to spend a lot to buy full grown ornamental kale. I would like to grow them from seed. Can they be grown from seeds? When is the best time to sow them? It starts to get cold here around late September.

Thanks!

I have winter sown them. Works great.

start them about 8 weeks prior to when you want to set them out

so looks like I'm too late then. :(

I'll try the winter sow method. When they grow, should they be put in a shady area? I read before that they don't like sun or was the article incorrect?
