We started a whole bunch of apple trees from seeds. They get about an inch or two and then die. Is it a soil thing -too small of a pot, fertilizer is not being used, Ideas anyone?

Should also check light intensity, air circulation, water, soil for water retaing capability.............

The trees from the seed you have germinated are most likely came from apples that were grafted onto rootstock.

The reason they were grafted onto rootstock someplace, sometime long ago was that, as you have observed, they would otherwise die.

Some Greek wrote about Grafting apples 2200 years ago.

If you would give more information than "they die" we might be able to suggest a reason why they die. Al

depends on the apples i guess. I used to do a lot of grafting and would raise abour 200 seeds from Golden Delicious apples each winter to graft onto (very uniform and sturdy seedlings). Never had many problems with them. Stratify seeds in fridge for 2 months then plant in deep pots. set out in rows after last frost and dig to graft on next winter.
