The intense heat here in NE Kansas poses a problem when attempting to start broccoli from seed. In order to have transplants ready for fall planting, the seeds should be started in mid July. I've tried 32 cell inserts as well as using larger plastic tubs, but germination rate is poor even when kept in partial shade. I have a small greenhouse but it would be much too hot......... The only solution I've found is to wait for things to cool down & utilize my low tunnels into November...... Just wondering how the local nurseries are able to start theirs so early........

Nurseries control the environment. As veeta mentioned, have you tried starting them indoors where the temperature is cooler? They don't need light to germinate and once they sprout you can move them out, be sure to harden them off. SCG

Thanks folks! Yeah, starting them indoors (ie, in the A/C) has crossed my mind.... I'm currently having limited success with germination outside, but it's largely because we're experiencing some rain cooled temps........
